On the first floor, the pupils are waiting for the teacher to enter the classroom as it is locked. We have witnessed a very functional pedagogical methodology: the teacher is a conductor and coordinator, who assigns tasks and acts to develop critical thinking, which students usually perform in small groups, or peers to peers, with much autonomy and self-determination. The used strategies aimed at implementing a system that spread responsability . The lesson time is 45 minutes, in English, only sporadically the teacher uses the Portuguese language for some explanations.
The lesson takes place in a very harmonious and autonomous way. There are no problems related to disciplinary aspects, lack of attention, passive participation or distraction. Students are scholastically mature, willing, with their own motivation to study. They are very positive from the social point of view, they show a great sense of responsibility, they interact respectfully with their classmates and the teacher, who is not forced to do tricks to try to motivate them, but guides them, they are at the the center of the lesson, it is they who work.
The Portuguese teachers seem satisfied with their school system, unlike the Italian ones who complain about the bureaucratic malfeasance, the various organizational and structural deficiencies and the scarce and malfunctioning equipment that are inside the school. But like Italian teachers, they also complain about the economic treatment, and it is precisely their wage claim the cause of the strike in progress during our mobility.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we consider that our participation in the job shadowing activity has been very positive and stimulating, with experiences in the field. A comparative analysis has undoubtedly revealed the lack and structural and functional disparity of our school system, due to the lack of policies aimed at investing significantly in cultural and educational system. European education systems are often seen not as models to be imitated but as slogans , just like (Schools always open).
Our task, now, is to share our experience with other colleagues in our school, our students,
colleagues from other schools, with local and regional institutions in order to disseminate the acquired results and the experiences gained. Mattei” in Maglie: Mrs. Cosima Dima, Mrs Natalina Muscatello, Mrs Rachele Corallo, Mr. Oreste Fazzi.
The work consisted in following the Portuguese colleagues during their daily activities, observing their practices and methodologies, environments, behaviors, trying to grasp affinities and differences for a comparison made of dialogue and mutual exchange.
There were three Portuguese colleagues, Mr Rui de Campos, Mrs Ana Fernandes, Mrs Maria Olinda Martines who joined us during their activities and with whom we shared the work in class with the students.
The lesson was held in such a way as to give space to the centrality of the student, the teaching is conceived as a planning activity in order to promote critical, autonomous and responsible thought in the student. In short, active learning is encouraged, and great attention is paid to cooperative learning.
In fact, the preferred method was the cooperative one: after having seen short videos, the boys organized themselves in work groups trying to understand the salient features of the story, and through questions asked by the teacher or the classmates they had to expose their choices to the class. I would say nothing different from the teaching method operated in Italy. What is different is the extremely relaxed and quiet atmosphere, the teacher plays the role of facilitator and the lesson is rarely frontal.

Portuguese students in the classroom

I would like to say a few words about the irreproachable behavior of the students who, although in a fairly large number, took part in the lessons with great interest and motivation without ever bothering or bored. Our presence in the classroom did not destabilize them at all, they continued to do their work, sometimes asking for clarifications on the task to be performed. And they were only 14 years old. This amazed me deeply, and brought me in total mental delirium made of introspection, to question oneself, to find more suitable strategies for the learning styles of the new generations. Observing other slightly older pupils I was positively impressed by other aspects.
I was struck by the interest that the boys showed to each other: during the individual performances, all the classmates listened respectfully without ridiculing or judging the work of their partner and this seemed to me a sign of deep emotional maturity.
I wonder: those guys are better than ours? Are they smarter? Are they deeper? Or are they simply more accustomed to urge their emotional resources, their own creativity, not to consider these indispensable learning implications, an unnecessary insistence on a teacher who is a little too much out of time?
IIt is difficult to give an answer about it.

Comparison between two countries

With this in mind, I believe that the Erasmus plus project is an excellent opportunity to confront and research shared strategies in a European context. What I experienced made me reflect on some aspects of my profession. We often stop to reflect on the condition of the teacher or learner, but have we ever reflected on the spaces? Have we ever discussed about the environment in which all school members work? In Italian schools, unfortunately, the consideration of how much the environment in which learning is developed influences the results, is placed in second if not in the third level.
I think instead, if the spaces that welcome students during school hours were more comfortable, wider, brighter, better equipped, the learning process would be smoother and more usable.

Meeting with the authorities

Also interesting was the meeting with the Director of the school, which took place to tell the truth, towards the end of the week that illustrated the characteristics of the Portuguese educational system in its generality and its organizational structure. The indirect interaction unfortunately sets limits and the conversation turned out to be rather arid and detached due to the lack of knowledge of the English language.
An equally interesting meeting was the one with the city’s first citizen who welcomed us with extreme cordiality, professionalism and availability. During the meeting the mayor illustrated not only the Portuguese educational system but also the various initiatives developed by the public administration with particular attention to the school world and to the homeless trying to satisfy the needs of the population. The fairly relaxed atmosphere allowed us to ask questions about various sectors, not only those related to the school and she also fully satisfied our curiosity without ever “looking at the clock”.

Conclusions

The experience lived in the week of job shadowing has been from the human and professional point of view unforgettable and intense and although it has put us in crisis, gave us a strong motivational push and an enthusiasm to experiment with teaching strategies more in line with the times and less conventional.
We must never lose sight of the importance of our profession that is not trivially to transmit content that could be lost but to provide the new generations with the tools to deeply know themselves and face what the future reserves them with awareness and critical thought.

<a href="https://www.iissmatteimaglie.edu.it/erasmus_plus/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/relazione_esperienza.pdf" target="_blank"
